About the Class

If you have ever longed to be the master of your own ship, then this course is for you! This June, Mohican Sailing Club, in conjunction with Akron Fossils and Science Center, will be offering a "Learn To Sail" program designed for beginners who would like to learn the basics of sailing. The classes will be conducted over two evenings at Akron Fossils and Science Center. A final four hour on-water lesson will take place at Mohican Sailing Club in Mansfield, Ohio, about 50 minutes south of Akron.

What you will learn:

  • Basics of water safety
  • Rules of the water
  • Knot tying
  • Sailing basics
  • Essential sailing  terminology and techniques students
  • Key terms, equipment, and parts of any sailing vessel

The course will focus on the rigging of the Sunfish sailboat, a very popular international boat that is raced and used widely as a rental and recreational boat. These boats, made available through Mohican Sailing Club, will be used for the final on-water class. Special arrangements will also be made to try sailing on a larger boat for those who may have an interest.

Instructor: Bill Sanderson

Bill has been sailing for over 50 years and is a former Masters National Champion for the Interlake Sailing Class Association. He is still actively racing both the Interlake and the Sunfish and has taught scores of beginners the basics of sailing.

Reservations for the class can be made over the phone by calling 330-665-3466, or by emailing
