The battle over the age of the earth has deep roots in Niagara Falls. It was here at the Falls in 1841 that Charles Lyell, an influential colleague of Charles Darwin, promoted his concept of uniformity in geologic processes throughout the past. Lyell came to America anxious to find geologic features that would take more time to form than the Bible would allow. As a result, Lyell's concepts of slow geological processes was widely embraced by geologists for decades but has been largely abandoned by geologists today.
Local residents who lived near the Falls, at the time of Lyell's visit, insisted that the Falls were retreating at a rate of at least three to five feet each year. Although he observed it for only a brief time (less than one year), Lyell estimated that rate to only be one foot per year. Thus, Charles Lyell charged that the Bible was in error because his estimate told him that Niagara Falls would have taken 35,000 years to form!
Come learn the truth about how long it has taken Niagara Falls to erode through the Niagara Gorge. The facts you will learn on this trip will astound you!
