Digging Up Dragons LectureDigging Up Dragons Lecture with Dan Janzen

Both dinosaurs and dragons have picked up their fair share of mythology — dragons due to the embellishment of the historical record, and dinosaurs due to the inaccuracy of the evolutionary theory. Dan Janzen will show genuine and replica artifacts from around the world showing that the dragons of legend are in fact the dinosaurs of the fossil record.

Founders Fodder

by William Sanderson, II

William SandersonEverything is new at the Akron Fossils & Science Center.  When we enter the winter months I often wonder, ‘How we are going to keep moving the organization forward? How can we be more refined and efficient in our message and growth opportunities?’ Thus far, the first 3 months of this year have been our best first 3 months ever. Somehow, we are always given the answers in our many meetings and planning sessions.

Greg Spickard has stepped in to offer his professional guidance in the organizational issues and has been a great help to me with fresh ideas and a willingness to help. Josiah will be focusing his efforts in outreach and connecting people to the museum at a more consistent level. Jessica has had her responsibilities altered and continues to handle the organizational and administrative duties from the inside, as well as assisting at booths and conventions. Cindy has made a huge improvement in this year's Science Fair. Along with the children’s entries, we have several adult entries which require a higher level of critique. Jodie has made immediate changes to the birthday program and the Super Science Saturday venue-- both of which are breaking all records in attendance. The plans she has for the summer are being finalized and are going to be excellent upgrades.

Our radio campaign on 95.5 The Fish has also been successful and we intend to continue with at least another campaign.

Lastly, we are making serious changes to the property, with additional parking and “clean up” in the park. Nick Reinfeld has developed additional suggestions for how to make our outdoor presentation more appealing. Thank you for your continued prayerful and financial support, and don’t hesitate to be bold ambassadors for our mission.

Sincerely,
William Sanderson

From the Director

by Josiah Detwiler

Josiah Detwiler   Fieldtrips: We have a few new fieldtrips this year in addition to our annual wilderness canoe trip in the Minnesota-Canadian Boundary Waters. On August 20th we will be taking a group to Hocking Hills State Park for a rappelling trip, and in September we will participate in the CRSEF (worldbydesign.org) creation group’s annual fossil hunt. On May 21st my wife and I, along with Terry Kanouse, will be leading a guided tour of the New York side of Niagara Falls.

The Falls has great significance to the age of the earth debate. It was here at the falls that Charles Lyell estimated the rate of erosion of the falls through the Niagara Gorge as one foot per year. Because the Gorge is 35,000 feet long, Lyell determined that it must have taken 35,000 years to erode. He charged that the Bible was in error because it teaches that the earth is young (6,000 years). You will learn the truth about how long it really took Niagara Falls to erode, get a chance to ride the Maid of the Mist ferryboat and receive a one-of-a-kind tour handbook! This tour will be a great opportunity for the whole family. No passports will be needed for the tour.

Financial Update: We are continuing to look for volunteers and monthly financial supporters of the museum. Just think, if fifty patrons invested $50 a month for one year, our annual budget for growth would increase by $30,000. That’s $30,000 more toward advancing the scope and scale of our outreach! Imagine how many more people could learn about the reality of our Creator with a budget that size or larger! We need your help to raise the funds. How much can you commit to give on a monthly basis? If you can’t give financially as an individual, maybe your employer would like to become a corporate sponsor for our museum or one of our special events? Maybe your church would like to add our museum to their mission board as an extension of their outreach? Please contact me today to set up the parameters of your regular giving or to make a referral. We have also created a new section on our website devoted to planned giving options. On our website you can also find a list of items and services needed at the museum.

Outreach: Consider inviting myself or Mr. Sanderson to speak to your group. We can give creation science presentations to any age group (from pre-schoolers to senior citizens)! I have developed a hands-on presentation called “Museum in a Backpack” that I can even give in a public school classroom!

Lecture Series and Guest Speakers: We have guest speakers coming to speak at our museum every month this year! In addition to this, we are looking for churches and groups to host some of our Lecture Series speakers to present at their church while they are in town. Would you like to host one of our guest speakers? Please contact me to host an event:

  • June 26 - Dr. Jerry Bergman is available to speak on Darwinism: The Doorway to Atheism.
  • July 29-31 - Darek Isaacs is available to speak about Dragons or Dinosaurs? He has authored a book and directed a movie on this subject. See our website for the movie trailer.
  • October 7 – Internationally known, Dr. Jonathan Sarfati from Australia will be in town to speak about his latest book The Greatest Hoax on Earth: Refuting Dawkins on Evolution.

Remember, every dollar given goes directly toward keeping the Science Center debt-free!

Science Class News

by Cindy Julius, B.S. Biology

Cindy Julius   Circle Saturday, May 7th, on your calendar to come to the museum with picnic lunch in hand as it will be a full day of fellowship at our 3rd Annual Science Fair Convention. Over 30 amateur creation scientists of a wide spread of ages will be acknowledging their Creator and His handiwork in the created world through presentations all afternoon, with a highlight on adult presentations at 6pm in the evening.

Adult presenters will include Tirzah Julius, the creator of a new museum exhibit on dragons which includes an “infinity well” to be showcased during this convention week.   Other participants include Faith Lanshe, “Autism, One Family’s Journey Into Understanding”, cake artist Rachel Bruce, “The Science of Cakes”, Melody Lyons, “A Heavenly Record of the Glory of God”, amateur naturalist Andrew James, “The World of Lepidoptera – Life Cycle of the Butterfly”, Linda McBride, “The Anthropic Principle – Our Finely Tuned Planet”, and Becky Stewart, “Exploring the Feasibility of Fossil Formation in a Short Time Period”.

Younger scientists will be covering a wide variety of topics at 2pm which include: the properties of sand, plant life, finding design in the human body, genetics involving people, cats, pollution, evaporation, momentum, nature studies involving local water samples, observations in Brazil, testing batteries, paint, candles, and dyes.

Of the high school presenters, three are homeschoolers who will be competing for the Alicia Cooper Memorial Fund cash prizes. Your supportive presence will lend strength to the faith walk of these young pioneers taking back the realm of science for the glory of God.

Kids Zone & Birthday Parties

by Jodie Brewer

Jodie Brewer   I look forward to the days when the museum begins to bud again with warmer play dates and new adventures. Looking back over the last few months, we have had many exciting new things going on in the children's department.  The new birthday party packages have really taken off, giving us many Saturdays of wacky science fun and dusty dino digging.  Now more than ever, our birthday parties are filled with so much excitement that the kids just don't want them to end.  Super Science Saturday has also seen its share of fun.  With our new weekly classes, we have been able to really focus on more concentrated learning.  Each month a new topic is explored in an effort to widen each student's comprehension and sharpen their learning focus.  So far this year, we have studied the realm of Homology, the Irreducible Complexity of the Human Heart, and the differences between Micro and Macro Evolution.  All of the Super Science Saturday classes are done in an interactive way to promote enjoyment in learning.  Stop in some time, you might even get the privilege of hearing one of our homemade science songs…?? Variation, Adaptation, Mutation, Speciation…lalalalalala! ??

Focusing forward to the upcoming months, we have many new things planned.  Saturday, May 14, 2011, we will be having our first ever KIDS SCIENCE BASH to celebrate a love for science, and the end of the Science Fair 2011.  You won't want to miss this event.  We will have science experiment stations set up with all kinds of wacky science fun.  There will be special wacky guest scientists, give-a-ways, explosions, and of course, lots and lots of silly string.  Come prepared for a wacky time. Dress up to enter our wacky mad scientist costume contest, and bring as many guests as you can to be entered into a drawing for some great science prizes.

Another upcoming event to look forward to is Dinosaur Adventure Camp.  This year with 4 weeks, and 2 themes to choose from, you are sure to find a camp that’s just right for you.  What will we be doing at Dinosaur Adventure Camp?  Well, with the word "adventure" in the title, you can be sure a lot of adventure will be taking place.  We will, as in times past, still have different learning centers for our fun, but new this year will be adventure and survival skills laced throughout the learning as we embark on new "what if" scenarios of imagination.  Pick your week and sign up now for the adventure!
For more information concerning upcoming events, check out our website.  The fun is beginning to blossom.  You don't want to miss it!
