| Monthly Lecture Series | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Our lecture series is for students and adults who want to learn more about, operational science, Intelligent Design, and natural history from a creation view point. Our lectures tend to be more topically specific than the information presented in our guided tours of the museum.
| Hear Ian Juby... Saturday, June 7th from 7-8 p.m. at the Science Center | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ian Juby | The Fossil Cliffs of Joggins, Nova Scotia with guest lecturer Ian Juby About the lecture The illustrated, semi- technical talk will discuss Joggins fossil cliffs located on the shore of the Bay of Fundy, Novia Scotia. In 1851 Charles Lyell and William Dawson brought the Joggins fossil cliffs to the attention of the scientific community. The cliffs are known for their many polystrate fossil lycopods and calamites (reed-like plants passing through multiple rock layers). The exposed sedimentary rocks in the cliffs are tilted on end and display a 4.5 km thick section exposed along the beach. The whole cliff face itself is nearly three times the thickness of the exposed strata in the Grand Canyon offering an ideal location to study a large portion of the geologic record! Ian will offer scientific theories explaining how the sedimentary rocks and fossils at Joggins do not require long periods of time to be deposited. Also to be discussed is an overview of the fossil and geological evidence for the Genesis Flood at Joggins, Nova Scotia. ![]()
![]() Lycopods and calamites were giant, hollow reeds. Both are present today, but in a much smaller modern form. While this lycopod cuts through over 7.5 m of strata, its modern counterpart, the clubmoss, seldom exceeds 0.5 m in height. Scale in left hand is in 10 cm increments; right hand is pointing to a cavity left behind by the top of the lycopod.
About the speaker Ian Juby is the president of the International Creation Science SIG for Mensa members and the director of the traveling Creation Science Museum of Canada (CSMC) and CORE Ottawa (Citizens for Origins Research and Education). The traveling CSMC is intended to reach the spread-out, predominantly rural population of Canada. For more than 15 years, Ian has researched and spoken about creation science throughout North America. His unique museum pieces are now in seven different museums in Canada and the U.S. He has also appeared on international television with his scientific models and research.
