Founders Fodder
by William Sanderson, II
My, my- what a summer we have had. Our emphasis on marketing really paid off. Josiah hosted several booths and spoke at a wide variety of places to diversified audiences. We did some radio ads on 95.5 “The Fish” which produced measurable results. We plan to use our remaining budget with them to advertise Dr. Sarfati, who is speaking at Heritage Christian on October 7th at 7 p.m. His lecture is on “Design, Deluge, and Dilemma,” which we encourage as many people as possible to attend. We also plan to use 95.5 to help us boost our attendance at the Silent Auction, which this year is being held at Northside Christian Church in Wadsworth. Greg Spickard and his team have planned an exciting event featuring a “Dinner & Show.” Please join us; we already are receiving some wonderful donations.
We are having the best year we have ever had- with attendance and revenue outpacing every year prior. We received the Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors’ Bureau Zenith Hospitality Website Award for the best website in the Akron Visitor’s Circuit. We are also expanding. After much discussion and prayer, we decided not to renew the lease for the printers who faithfully rented from us for several years. We have taken over this space to double our space for lectures and tours, as well as adding two very nice offices for our operations. We have made tremendous progress on these renovations, however, we could still use any financial or manpower help you might consider giving.
Jodie’s birthday parties are still going strong, and the camps program was very well received. Cindy’s classes are filling at this time and I would urge you to spread the word about our classes. The canoe trip was a great success, and our summer staff did a great job managing our endless stream of groups and ‘walk-ins’.
There are too many exciting things to mention here- please check out the website. We can never say “thank you” enough for your prayerful and financial support.
Sincerely,
William Sanderson

From the Director
by Josiah Detwiler

Most of our visitors hear about us from family and friends, or on the internet when looking for things to do in the Akron area. In light of this we have created a Facebook page to make it easy for you tell your friends about our museum and park. We also have a special “promote us” page on our website where you can download posters, PowerPoint slides and church bulletin inserts promoting our events. We can also supply you with flyers, brochures and our “Dino Dollar” coupons for you to share with friends or post in public places. Just say the word and we’ll get our materials into your hands.
Become a Museum Member - If you plan on visiting us more than twice a year, consider buying an annual family membership. The perks are great and the $75 pass supports a good cause. Think about it, what other institution can you take your friends, family and students to where you will hear amazing facts of science presented in a God-honoring way, hold real fossils, enjoy a guided tour (catered to the age of your group), play in an outdoor adventure park (complete with a 200 foot long zip-line, 9 hole mini-golf course, swings, slides and more), plus get to eat your packed lunch in an outdoor picnic shelter?!
New Speakers - I can no longer keep up with all of the requests for my traveling “Museum in a Backpack” presentations. John Lookabaugh and Jodie Brewer have joined our speaker’s panel and will also be available to give presentations in schools and churches. I encourage you to read more about John and Jodie on the outreach section of our website.
Help Needed for Projects - Many people do not realize that we often schedule volunteer work parties to help us with cleaning, maintenance and new construction projects throughout the year. If you’d like to organize a work day for your family or group, or just help out as an individual, please take a look at the Wish List on our website to see our current needs. Speaking of projects, the illustration shown here is a concept drawing of what our museum entrance will look like once enough funding for the project is procured.
Thank you again for all of your prayers and support.

Science Class News
by Cindy Julius, B.S. Biology
The museum has its seasons, and with the end of summer comes the season for classes to begin. Before I list the class requests, however, I would like to update you:
Rappelling in Hocking Hills - We had great weather and a wonderful group of 14 people who went rappelling and scrambling over rocks at our annual rappelling trip. Al Parker, our outfitter from Canoe Creations, also gave us several mini lectures on Noah's flood and its evidences in Hocking Hills geology. We had both beginner and more advanced rappellers. Everyone got to go a little further in their skills. Picture and video links are available on our website if you would like to see what you can join in on next fall.
Dinosaur repair and fossil casting - I know we have several budding artists who have participated in science classes here at the museum. Well, dear artists, restoration work is in progress on the dinos we already have in Truassic Park and I am sure the museum would love to see us make some more. If you are interested in tutoring time with me to learn the ropes, please email me for more info. We would also love donations of fiberglass and bondo. I have also begun fossil replica casting. Again, be sure to email me if tutoring in this area would be of interest to you.
A donation of several, used double-paned windows will be incorporated in our continuing solar panel project. The electricity generated will allow the museum to run electrical equipment at convention tables without needing to pay for hook up. Thanks to students who got us started last year while learning soldering skills.
Gorgeous minerals donated by Answers in Genesis are also still being labeled and cataloged for use in classes. A tornado simulator was built by Mr. Brewer and tweaked by me. It will be available to use in classes and to rent to teachers. For those of you who helped get the simulator going in summer camp, we have changed the "tracer" from incense (which was a little too smoky) to a cool steam generator.
The on-site fossil boulder was finally unearthed in Truassic Park. It contains many small bryozoans and brachiopods. The site is still available for exploration. Requested classes this year currently include: Algebra 1/2 and Algebra II, junior science, apologetics, dinosaurs and caves.

Kids Zone & Birthday Parties
by Jodie Brewer
We had a great summer, this year, with many exciting things going on here at the Science Center. Camps were in full swing with two themes to choose from; “Surviving the Great Catastrophe” and “Digging for Clues to the Past”. The heat really got us the first session, but we made it, as we tried to learn how to survive catastrophic conditions like tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and mudslides. With daily challenges, our kids had a ball of fun competing for food, learning survival skills, and of course zipping down the survival line just for fun! Our second session took a less dangerous approach, as we focused more on how the clues from the past had the ability to unlock the fossil mysteries of today. The kids got the chance to touch, sort, and identify real fossils. Volcanoes also became part of our focus throughout the week, complete with making our own simulated volcano to explode at home.
This summer our Super Science Saturday club discovered that scientific exploration isn’t seasonal, it can be done all year long in all kinds of weather conditions. Check out our Facebook page for some great pictures of each month’s theme and lessons. Thanks to all the Super Science Saturday Kids who helped make the “Darwin’s Discoveries” display board hanging in the gift shop, and the “Amazing Plant Life” display nestled in between Day 3 and Day 4 of the Doors of Truth. The upcoming themes of study every Saturday from 10-11 a.m. for the rest of the year: symbiosis, fungus, fossils, and penguins. Stop out and see us!
Birthday parties are still hopping with our two different themed packages; Wacky Mad Scientist and Getting Dusty Digging for Dinosaurs. With our newly acquired space, the old lecture hall will soon be transformed into the new kids’ area for even better birthday parties to come. Keep an eye out for the unveiling of our new Birthday party package theme, coming soon in November: AMAZING ASTRONOMY!
