  Super Science Saturdays!    

This event is a monthly Saturday afternoon activity geared for children ages 5-10 year olds.  Come and participate in a science lesson and craft. Come prepared to get messy!
Super Science Saturday


When: The second Saturday of every month

Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Akron Fossils and Science Center

Cost: $3 per person (no more than $8 combined for multiple siblings)
January 9, 2010:  Let it Snow: Design in Snowflakes-- Who doesn’t love the snow??!! Snowball fights, building forts, and sledding are great fun. But did you ever get to look closely at a snowflake? Come and discover the uniqueness of snowflakes and make some really cool ones of your own.

February 13, 2010:
Fantastic Flowers! How do flowers get their colors? Through the art of science, we can change the color of some flowers. Come this day and find out how! You can even take a flower home to do your own experiment!

March 13, 2010:
Dangerous Dragons! So many of our favorite books and movies have dragons in them, but what do we really know about these legendary creatures? Has anyone ever seen a dragon? Where do all these dragon stories come from? All these questions will be answered, and more!

April 10, 2010:
Bubbleology! A Super Science Saturday favorite! Come explore the exciting world of bubbles! What is the biggest bubble you can make? Can you make a square bubble? Prepare to get messy!

May 8, 2010: Fantastic Fossils! We have lots and lots of fossils here at the museum that are from all over the world. Come get a closer look at some fantastic pieces from our collection as we learn where fossils come from. Then, make a pretend fossil to take home and start a collection of your own.

June 12, 2010:
Stormy Weather! You may not be in Kansas anymore but do you know what causes a tornado? How about a thunderstorm? Come find out there is nothing to be afraid of as we explore the amazing world of storms and storm safety.

July 10, 2010:
Let's Go Buggy! Don't go buggy when you see these creepy crawly things in your backyard; Insects serve important roles in God's wonderful creation! Come learn some surprising bug facts and see who can design the scariest, grossest, or prettiest bug! We will also try to make edible bugs!

August 14, 2010:
The Worldwide Flood-- You've probably heard the story of Noah's Ark before, but how much do you really know about it? Come discover the science of Noah's Ark and the rainbow, and make a mini ark of your own!

September 11, 2010: Life in the Great Ice Age-- Many of you have probably seen the movies about the Ice Age. We know about the Wooly Mammoth and Saber-Toothed tiger, but when did the Ice Age occur? What made it happen? What other animals lived during this time? We'll answer all these questions and even do a fun project!

October 9, 2010:
Things That Go Bump in the Night! Are you afraid of the dark? There is no need to be! In fact, there are lots of animals that only come out at night. Bats, wolves, owls, and many more will be explored in our exciting presentation! We will play a game to understand how these animals stay out at night and make a spooky bat craft!

November 13, 2010:
Amazing Astronomy! "Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are!" What do you see when you look up in the night sky? There are some exciting things going on above our heads! Come explore the night sky in the middle of the afternoon and make a starry craft to take home!

December 11, 2010:
Sweet Science! You don't have to be Willy Wonka to appreciate the science of candy making. Join us as we learn how some of our favoirte Christmas candies are made and try some sugary science experiments. Make a candy Christmas decoration for your home too!


Note to Parents:  The projects will be supervised by our trained youth and adult staff.  Please be prompt in picking up your children after the event. Most of our spring and summer Super Science Saturdays take place outdoors so please have your child dress accordingly.
